Cleaning & Reset Guide

A simpler cleaning and laundry routine
Start with one task. Put suitable supplies where they belong, and make the next reset easier to repeat.
Start with a simple planWhat gets in your way?
- Supplies are scattered or hard to reach
- The tool does not suit the task
- Laundry piles up between stages
Before you shop
- Choose one area. Pick a counter, sink, or other spot you use every day, rather than resetting the whole home at once.
- Check what you already have. Gather suitable supplies and note what is missing, duplicated, or awkward to reach.
- Match the task to the surface. Read product labels and surface care instructions. Test where recommended and never mix cleaning chemicals.
- Choose a return spot. Store supplies according to their labels, out of children's and pets' reach.
Give supplies a practical home
Group supplies by task only when their labels allow them to be stored together. Keep each chemical in its original labeled container, and do not use a food container for cleaner storage.
Before choosing a caddy, bin, or shelf, measure the tallest bottle and the available width, depth, and opening. Check whether you can remove the container without moving everything around it. Under a sink, allow for pipes and access to plumbing.
Try first: Move duplicates out of the active area and give the supplies you already use a consistent, suitable return spot. Add an organizer only if access or separation remains a problem.
Choose the tool for the job
- Cloths: Check the cloth and surface care instructions. Keep cloths used for different jobs separate, and wash and dry them as directed.
- Brushes: Compare head size, handle reach, and bristle suitability with the surface and gap you need to clean. Do not assume a stiff brush is suitable for a delicate finish.
- Cleaners: Check approved surfaces, required ventilation, application directions, and any contact-time instructions on the label. An all-purpose name does not mean every surface is suitable.
Allow reusable tools to dry as their instructions direct before returning them to storage. Avoid buying several versions of a tool until you know what your current one cannot do.
Build a laundry route, not another pile
- Collect: Place a hamper where worn clothing actually gathers, while keeping doors and walkways clear.
- Sort: Follow garment care labels. If you use divided hampers, choose divisions that match your routine rather than adding categories you will not maintain.
- Wash and dry: Keep detergent in its original labeled container and follow garment, detergent, and appliance instructions. Preserve required appliance ventilation and service clearance.
- Return: Reserve a clear folding spot or a basket for carrying clean clothing back to its room.
Check the fit before choosing storage
Measure a hamper's footprint, lid opening, and the route you carry it along. For a narrow cart or shelf, check appliance-door clearance and access to controls, outlets, and service points. Review the item's stated capacity and installation requirements.
If you only change one thing: Identify where laundry stops moving, then give that stage a usable place before adding more storage.
