Set up the spaces you use every day

Plan a wall, garage, or living area around access, fit, and installation before choosing what to add.

Before you choose a setup

  1. Name the task. Decide what needs a place and how often you need to reach it.
  2. Measure the usable area. Include width, height, depth, door movement, and walking space.
  3. Check the load and installation. Review item weight, stated capacity, surface compatibility, and all maker instructions.
  4. Try the layout first. Mark the proposed footprint or mounting position and check that nearby controls and access points remain usable.

Wall & shelf setup: confirm what the wall can support

A shelf or hook needs more than the right appearance. Identify the wall material, the product's mounting method, and the load it is intended to hold.

  • Measure the whole setup: Include the shelf or hook projection and the size of the items placed on it.
  • Match the installation: Follow the maker's requirements for supports, fasteners, spacing, and any surface preparation.
  • Check the stated capacity: Do not assume hardware included with one product is appropriate for every wall. The complete installation must meet the product's requirements.
  • Preserve access: Keep doors, switches, outlets, vents, and other required access points clear.

Before drilling, confirm the location is suitable and check for concealed services. If the wall, anchors, or installation requirements are unclear, use a qualified installer. A suitable freestanding option may make more sense when mounting is not appropriate.

Garage & utility: group storage by job

Sort tools and supplies into groups such as repairs, gardening, or seasonal equipment. Separate frequently used tools from occasional-use items, and retain required access to doors, equipment, and services.

  1. List what needs storage. Note item dimensions and weight rather than choosing a unit by its advertised shelf count alone.
  2. Plan shelf placement. Place heavier items low when consistent with the maker's instructions. Check shelf and unit capacity and anchoring requirements.
  3. Check wall storage. Choose hooks or panels only when their mounting requirements and stated capacity suit the actual tools and wall.
  4. Test retrieval. Make sure you can remove a tool, bin, or bike without blocking the route through the space.

For bike storage

Check compatibility with the bike, its weight, the mounting surface, and the lifting or rolling movement needed. Allow clearance for handlebars, pedals, and access to the bike. Follow the product's instructions and seek installation help when needed.

Store chemicals, batteries, and other supplies according to their labels and manufacturer guidance; a general-purpose bin does not establish compatibility or suitable storage conditions.

Keep it working: Label grouped supplies and give each regularly used tool a consistent return spot.

Living & home setup: make the room work first

Identify what collects in the room, such as reading materials, remotes, or blankets. Give each group a place close to where it is used.

  • Furniture and storage: Mark the full footprint and check doors, drawers, walking routes, and seating access. Follow assembly and anchoring requirements.
  • Open or closed storage: Use visibility and frequency of use to decide. A few frequently used items may suit open storage; other groups may be easier to manage behind a door or in a container.
  • Slipcovers: Check the maker's measurement and furniture-shape guidance, including arms and cushions. Do not assume a cover fits every sofa of similar width.
  • Lighting: Check placement, outlet access, product compatibility, and electrical instructions. Route cords without pinching them or creating a trip hazard.

Keep it working: Try one layout change before adding another storage piece. Keep a setup only if it remains easy to use and put back.
